Q. Non-verbal communication is an important part of social communication. Identify the different types of non-verbal communication in the following parts:
(i) Identify and describe (in one or two sentences) ‘welcoming, threatening, and persuasive’ images from the following? (6)
Example: Image no.4 is identified as ‘caring’ and it represents one’s care and love.
Solution:
Image 1:
Threatening: the face of the girl is anxious which means the hands on her shoulder may cause her to feel at risk.
Image 2:
Persuasive: the man is speaking in a good mood. May be he is trying to persuade someone to do or believe something through reasoning.
Image 3:
Welcoming: the man is behaving in a polite way to a guest or new arrival into his shop or home maybe.
Image 4:
Image no.4 is identified as ‘caring’ and it represents one’s care and love.
(ii) Touching is a type of non-verbal communication which operates at many levels. Identify and describe (in one to two sentences) images which represent functional, professional, socio-political, friendship-warmth, and love-intimacy levels of touch. (10)
Example: Image no.4 is identified as ‘commitment level’ and it represents one’s promise to commit some act.
Solution:
Image 1:
Love intimacy: the reason is because the touch in the picture shows the love of the mother and the son for each other.
Image 2:
Socio-Political touch…. the picture above presents a crowd of a political meeting.
Image 3:
Love-intimacy: arrow in heart is used to present the falling in love or a new fling.
Image 4:
The image presents the ‘commitment level’ and it represents one’s promise to commit some act
Image 5:
Friendship-Warmth Touch. The reason is because the picture here presents two friends together.
Image 6:
Functional touch because a task is being performed in this image.
(iii) Name and describe the type of touch in the context of following images.
Solution:
Image 1:
“Physical conflict” is more limited in range than the other types of signals, as the picture here presents the two deer right next to each other in order to fight.
Image 2:
This picture has three different people using three different gestures. This type of touch is done during conversation to grab the attention of the viewer or the listener.
